Magnetically actuated tuning method for Gunn oscillators

    Get PDF
A tunable microwave generator based on the Gunn effect is disclosed. The generator includes a semiconductor material which exhibits the Gunn effect when current flows between anode and cathode end contacts. The material has a plurality of sides each with a scratch at a different distance from the anode contact. A magnetic field is produced by a magnet placed about the semiconductor field. The Lorentz force produced as a function of the current flow and the magnetic field drive the electrons to the surface of one of the sides to cause nucleation to occur at the scratch. A domain formed thereat travels to the anode contact to provide pulses at a frequency which is related to the distance between the scratch and the anode contact

Applications of GridProbe technology for traffic monitoring on high-capacity backbone networks, data-link layer simulation approach

This paper covers the on-going research on MASTSproject. The project objectives are to set-up and exploit a trafficmonitoring system for the UKLIGHT international high capacityexperimental network. The proposed system will record data flowand topological information at a range of time scales (fromfractions of a second to years). It will make this informationavailable to the community as a web service and managementinterfaces. In this paper the focus is on development of simulationplatforms that enable testing the analysis algorithms and Webservices output

Theoretical Investigation of Submerged Inlets at Low Speeds

The general characteristics of the flow field in a submerged air inlet are investigated by theoretical, wind-tunnel, and visual-flow studies. Equations are developed for calculating the laminar and turbulent boundary-layer growth along the ramp floor for parallel, divergent, and convergent ramp walls, and a general equation is derived relating the boundary-layer pressure losses to the boundary-layer thickness. It is demonstrated that the growth of the boundary layer on the floor of the divergent-ramp inlet is retarded and that a vortex pair is generated in such an inlet. Functional relationships are established between the pressure losses in the vortices and the geometry of the inlet. A general discussion of the boundary layer and vortex formations is included, in which variations of the various losses and of the incremental external drag with mass-flow ratio are considered. Effects of compressibility are also discussed

When Patient Activation Levels Change, Health Outcomes and Costs Change, Too

Patient engagement has become a major focus of health reform. However, there is limited evidence showing that increases in patient engagement are associated with improved health outcomes or lower costs. This report examined the extent to which a single assessment of engagement, the Patient Activation Measure, was associated with health outcomes and costs over time, and whether changes in assessed activation were related to expected changes in outcomes and costs. The report uses data on adult primary care patients from a single large health care system where the Patient Activation Measure is routinely used. Results indicating higher activation in 2010 were associated with nine out of thirteen better health outcomes -- including better clinical indicators, more healthy behaviors, and greater use of women's preventive screening tests -- as well as with lower costs two years later. Changes in activation level were associated with changes in over half of the health outcomes examined, as well as costs, in the expected directions. These findings suggest that efforts to increase patient activation may help achieve key goals of health reform and that further research is warranted to examine whether the observed associations are causal
